Under the Drop Trap: Ana's Quest to Prevent Homeless Cats

Ana is one of our incredible Feral Fixers. She is the perfect example of how we are trying to create a community of responsible caretakers. Many of our Feral Fixers are English language learners and have a hard time reaching out to organizations for assistance. Thankfully Ana reached out to another Feral Fixer who knew exactly who to send her to. Ana struggles with transportation but enlisted a family member to help drive cats to the spay/neuter clinic. She borrowed one of our traps and with some guidance has become a responsible caretaker. Your donations and our work have empowered her to do more than feed.

What motivated you to start caring for cats outside?

The love I feel for animals when I see them unprotected, hungry and thirsty, and knowing that there are many people who can help and don't. How did you get involved in Trap Neuter Return? I met a girl who told me about that page and I filled out the application and the lady contacted me right away and she can help me. She is an angel for cats on earth.

What is your favorite kind of trap?

They lent me one that has been very useful and I think that all the people who trap use it.

What is your biggest challenge to getting all of the cats fixed in your area?

Some homeowners do not want to give permission to set the trap in the garden of the house. ( Despite this she was able to gain permission to trap in the front of a home on her block)

How do your neighbors feel about TNR?

Some people think it's a great help, while others don't care.

Why do you think there are so many cats outside?

Because of the responsibility of many people for not operating the cats and for giving them to anyone and those people leave them on the street

Have you ever tried to get help from your town or animal control? Did they help? How?

No, none because in Paterson it is very expensive and they say that animal control takes them and puts them to sleep and that is not the help I am looking for. (Sadly the spread of inaccurate information leads many to believe this. Shelters are required to hold animals for 7 days.)

How did you hear about the 50 Feral Fix Program?

By a friend who told me about the program

What do you find helpful about it?

All the help you have given me

What would make it even more helpful?

That the community joined this cause because they do a lot to do for the street cats. That the community is more aware and gets more involved in the problem and helps more. I am not saying that they do not help enough because they do many things for the cats.

Nothing makes us happier than our Feral Fixers spreading the word about our program and TNR! The only way to end the cycle of homeless cats is for those who feed to become responsible caretakers. We are here to help!
